The Doc
What does freedom look like for a child of the Great Migration when the world she knew has fundamentally shifted? Driven by suffocating loss, THE STATE OF OUR INDEPENDENCE follows Dionne Lea as she packs her bags and hits the road for a yearlong sabbatical.
In this cinematic exploration, California’s landscape becomes a metaphor for her search for identity, renewal, and freedom. Without the weight of familial expectations, she transforms their absence and her loss into a chance to redefine herself. As a seasoned storyteller, Dionne has always created live performances based on the stages of her life. She is using this journey to ask, “Who am I now? Who can I be?” as the inspiration for her next act. By immersing herself in California’s many cultures and terrains, she discovers that the coastline, the desert, and the shadowed canopy of the forest offer more than beautiful views; they become a refuge where she can be herself and mourn without explanation.
Dionne’s urge to escape becomes an unexpected adventure. Reflecting on the inheritance of duty, faith, and expectations passed down through generations, she examines whether the boundaries that have limited her were real or self-imposed. She discovers that freedom lies in being true to herself, telling her story now fearlessly, standing still without guilt, and being alone without feeling abandoned.
